La Galerie Davide Di Maggio - Mudimadue presenta la prima personale a Berlino di Francesco Jodice.

Nato nel 1967 a Napoli. Jodice indaga le relazioni tra i nuovi comportamenti sociali e le modificazioni del paesaggio urbano nelle metropoli contemporanee. Nel 1995 la sua tesi sperimentale in Architettura propone le video-culture come strumento metaprogettuale del territorio. E uno dei fondatori del gruppo Multiplicity network internazionale di artisti ed architetti, con i1 quale ha esposto il progetto Solid Sea a Documenta XI a Kassel (2002) e Border Device, 50" Biennale di Venezia (2003). Ha scritto e diretto con il fratello Sebastiano il cortometraggio The Gift. Docente di teoria e pratica dell'immagine tecnologica presso la Facoltà di Design e Arti Visive di Bolzano. Ha lavorato ed esposto in Europa, Giappone, Stati Uniti, Argentina, Canada, Australia, parteciperà alla 3° Biennale di Liverpool nel prossimo settembre. Vive a Milano.

Francesco Jodice espone a Berlino alcuni dei suoi progetti più significativi. Al primo piano della galleria la serie fotografica What We Want (1997-2004), monitoraggio del paesaggio urbano visto come la proiezione dei desideri della gente in cinquanta metropoli di tutto il mondo. A1 piano inferiore The Secret Traces (1998- 2004) che indagano la natura della cittadinanza o dell'appartenenza a un clan, un branco speciale. Le "tracce segrete" sono dunque una sequenza di pedinamenti di individui qualsiasi tra il punto A e il punto B di infinite metropoli. La comparazione, il confronto, tra alcuni di questi rileva la familiarità di gesti e funzioni, le dissonanze dei modi e dei significati. E infine i due lavori della serie Natura: The Crandall Case (2002) e Il caso Monte Maggiore (2004). Il primo ripercorre una delle stragi più efferate nella storia americana, il massacro che Wyley Gates nel dicembre 1986 perpetro ai danni della sua famiglia, ad East Chatham (Columbia County). Jodice ha fotografato la casa ed i luoghi in cui è avvenuto ì1 pluriomicidio, dopo aver ricostruito in una mappa il percorso del tragico avvenimento. Con lo stesso metodo indagatore si è recato nel bosco di Monte Maggiore nel casertano ("uno di quei luoghi in cui si accede solo superando una linea invisibile, oltre la quale c'è solo natura"), dove tra i112 ottobre 1998 e il 29 novembre 2002 sono scomparsi cinque anziani che si erano incamminati per una passeggiata.

La mostra proseguirà fino al 30 giugno 2004, durante l'inaugurazione sarà presentata la monografia edita Skira. L'artista sarà presente all'inaugurazione.

The Gallery Davide Di Maggio - Mudimadue presents the first solo exhibition of Francesco Jodice in Berlin.

Born in Naples in 1967, Jodice investigates the relations between new social conducts and the changes of the urban landscape in contemporary metropolises. In 1995 his experimental dissertation in architecture focused on video culture as instrument for territorial meta-design. He was one of the founders of the Multiplicity group, an international network of artists and architects, with which he presented the Solid Sea project at the Documenta XI in Kassel (2002), and the work ''Border Device'' at the 50th Venice Biennal (2003). He has written and directed the short The Gift together with his brother Sebastiano, and teaches ''theory and practice of technological image'' at the faculty of Design and Visual Arts in Bolzano. He has worked and exhibited in Europe, Japan, United States, Argentina, Canada, Australia, and will participate at the Third Liverpool Biennal next september. He lives in Milan.

Francesco Jodice exhibits some of his most important projects in Berlin. On the first floor of the gallery he will show the series of photographs What We want (1997-2004), a monitoring of the townscape seen as a projection of people's desires, in fifty metropolises all over the world. The ground floor will feature The Secret Traces (1998-2004) an investigation of the nature of citizenship and the fact of belonging to a clan, a special gang. The ''secret traces'' are thus a sequence of individuals, chosen randomly, who have been shadowed from point A to point B of an infinity of metropolises. The confrontation, the comparison, between some of these reveal a familiarity of gestures and functions, a dissonance of behaviors and meanings. And finally the two works of the Nature series: The Crandall Case (2002) and the Monte Maggiore Case (2004). The first retraces one of the most atrocious mass murders in American history, the massacre perpetrated by Wyley gates in 1986, killing his family in East Chatham (Columbia County). Jodice has photographed the homes and the locations where the multiple homicide has taken place, after having reconstructed the itinerary of the tragic event on a map. He has used the same investigation method during his visit of the Monte Maggiore forest near Caserta (''one of those places that one only enters by passing an invisible line, beyond which only nature exists'') where five aged persons who had gone for a walk have disappeared between 2 October 1998 and 29 November 2002.

The exhibition will be open till the 30. June 2004. The artist will be present at the opening and it will be presented the monograph, edited by Skira.

Die Galerie Davide Di Maggio - Mudimadue präsentiert zum ersten Mal die Einzelausstellung von Francesco Jodice.

Er ist 1967 in Neapel geboren. Jodice ergründet in seinen Arbeiten die Beziehung zwischen menschlichen Verhaltensweisen und den sich verändernden urbanen Landschaften der modernen Metropolen. Seine experimentelle Abschlussarbeit von 1995 beschäftigt sich mit der Videokultur als Meta-Werkzeug auf dem Gebiet der Architektur. Er ist einer der Begründer der Gruppe Multiplicity network international, die sich aus Künstlern und Architekten zusammensetzt und mit der er auf der Documenta XI in Kassel (2002) und auf der Border Device, der 50. Biennale von Venedig (2003) das Projekt Solid Sea ausgestellt hat. Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Sebastiano hat er den Kurzfilm The Gift geschrieben und verfilmt. Er ist Dozent für 'Theorie und Praxis der technologischen Bildkunst' an der Universität für Design und bildenden Kunst in Bozen. Er arbeitete und veröffentlichte bisher in Europa, Japan, den Vereinigten Staaten, Argentinien, Kanada und Australien und wird nächsten September an der dritten Biennale von Liverpool teilnehmen. Er lebt in Mailand.

In Berlin stellt Francesco Jodice einige seiner bedeutendsten Werke aus. Im ersten Stock der Galerie ist die fotografische Serie What We Want (1997-2004) zu sehen, eine Studie von Stadtlandschaften, die Projektionen der Sehnsüchte der Menschen aus fünfzig Metropolen der ganzen Welt darstellen. Im Erdgeschoss befindet sich The Secret Traces (1998-2004), welche das Wesen des Städters dem Wesen der reisenden Völker gegenüberstellt. Die “heimlichen Entwürfe” zeigen somit die zahlreichen “Beschattungen” beliebiger Individuen zwischen Punkt A und Punkt B undefinierter Metropolen. Der Vergleich, die Gegenüberstellung der verschiedenen Individuen, enthüllt die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der Gesten und ihrer Funktion und Bedeutung. Zu guter Letzt begegnen uns die Arbeiten der Serien Natura: The Crandall Case (2002) und Il caso Monte Maggiore (2004). Die erste Serie beruht auf einem der grausamsten Massaker in der amerikanischen Geschichte, dem Blutmassaker, das Wyley Gates im Dezember 1986 in East Chatham (Columbia County) an seiner Familie begangen hat. Nachdem Jodice das tragische Ereignis in einer Skizze rekonstruiert hatte, machte er Aufnahmen des Hauses und der Orte, an denen die Morde vollzogen wurden. Mit der gleichen aufklärerischen Methode hat er sich in den Wald von Monte Maggiore in der Nähe von Caserta begeben (“einer dieser Orte, den man nur erreicht, indem man eine unsichtbare Grenze überschreitet, hinter der einen nichts anderes erwartet als Natur”), wo zwischen dem 12. Oktober 1998 und dem 29. November 2002 fünf Senioren verschwanden, die bloß einen Spaziergang machen wollten.

Die Ausstellung bleibt bis zum 30. Juni 2004 geöffnet. Während der Ausstellung wird der Künstler anwesend sein und die Monographie, herausgegeben von Skira, vorgestellt.
